Manual MCP setup

Use this guide when configuring a local MCP client such as Cursor by hand. The server runs on your computer and requires Node.js. For Claude Code, Codex or Cursor, start with the desktop app guide. Its Cursor panel installs the plugin, and the one-click link there writes the configuration below for you. For ChatGPT or Claude on the web, use the browser connection guides on that page instead of this JSON.

Configure Cursor

Save this JSON in .cursor/mcp.json at your project's root, or ~/.cursor/mcp.json to use it in every project. If the file already exists, add fmrl inside its existing mcpServers object and keep your other servers. See Cursor's MCP configuration guide.

{ "mcpServers": { "fmrl": { "command": "npx", "args": ["-y", "fmrl-mcp"] } } }

No key step. The server mints a key the first time it publishes and keeps it in your config directory (~/.config/fmrl/credentials.json, or %APPDATA%\fmrl\credentials.json on Windows).

Optional environment overrides

Leave these unset for the standard setup. In Cursor, add an env object inside mcpServers.fmrl in the same configuration file; its members set environment variables for the local server process.

Variable When to use it
FMRL_API_KEY Use an existing API key instead of the locally stored key. Keep the value private.
FMRL_API_URL Point the server at a preview or a local development server instead of the default https://fmrl.site. Use the server's base URL.
